Website design & Data visualizationsA research team led by Dr. Thomas LaVeist at the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine examined the economic toll of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic health inequities across the United States. Published in JAMA in 2023, the study made clear that these disparities carry devastating costs—not only in lives and wellbeing, but across the national economy.
With the team at Online Optimism, I helped transform this complex body of research into an accessible, interactive digital experience. Our goal was to make the findings useful beyond the report itself—giving researchers, advocates, and policymakers practical ways to explore the data and identify opportunities for more equitable outcomes.
A visualized report
To orient visitors from the outset, we distilled the report’s most important findings into clear, approachable summaries. Together, these elements turn a dense national study into a tool for understanding inequity and acting on it.
We translated the research into responsive visualization that make comparisons across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups clear at a glance. I also helped shape an interactive state-by-state map, allowing visitors to uncover local trends, examine disparities in context, and access the full set of data for each state.
